YOUSUF RAHMAN BABU

In the annals of Bangladesh’s cricket history, he is known as Yousuf Babu who is without a doubt, the first poster boy of Bangladesh cricket. Termed “Hero of Dhaka” for his impactful and barrier breaking innings of 78 against the visiting MCC on January 7, 1977 that started the journey of our cricket and took it to where it is today, he is still remembered by many, both domestically and internationally, as a cricketer of high class and skill. Yousuf is considered to be a role model for his era and, whenever he went to the crease, he brought with him a breath of fresh air and flair.

He has the distinction of scoring the first international century for Bangladesh which he scored against Papua New Guinea in the 1982 ICC Trophy. He topped the batting average and aggregate of his side in the 1982 ICC Trophy. An all round cricketer, Yousuf was equally adept in all three departments of the game as time and again, he proved his value to the team by scoring runs and taking wickets.

He has been honored by the MCC where his Bangladesh cap of 1982 has been catalogued and is permanently on display in the prestigious Long Room of the Lord’s Pavilion in London along with several immortals of the game. He is the first and only cricketer from Bangladesh to be interviewed by the MCC Archive and Library Manager, which has been preserved in the MCC Archives on a permanent basis.
